Nostalgia

I only have a month left on the island and I’ve become quite nostalgic. I keep thinking of how I felt when I first got here and wanting to return to all of the spots that I have already seen, while making a list of all the things I want to do before leaving. Must…

Im really bad at blogging

I started this blog in August as a way to document my time in Grenada. To see how my work was influenced by my surroundings (and lack of Target) and how my physical and mental self would change too. As someone who has a very hard time writing, I knew that starting a blog would…

It is hot here.

Coming from Wisconsin I love venturing anywhere warm. I love the heat and the sun. I love wearing short sleeves and dresses. I knew it was going to be hot and humid in Grenada, so the fact that it is hot is not a surprise to me. The big change is that this is not…

Animals Everywhere

It is hard getting used to animals being everywhere. Driving home from the airport there were two huge cows grazing on the side of the road. On our daily excursions I see plenty of goats meandering about. Coming from suburbia this is a strange thing! BUT also, super adorable. Wild dogs are everywhere and it…

La Sagesse, St. David’s, Grenada

Today’s adventure was to La Sagesse for lunch. Compared to Grand Anse, this beach is quite and feels secluded from the rest of the island. As we came in we crossed a small river, parked in front of a long line of trees, then continued to walk from there. As we emerge from the path…

Sunset at the beach

I don’t have much to say about this adventure. After a few hours of helping out at Susan Mains Gallery at the Spiceland Mall we ventured over to the Grand Anse beach to wind down. Drinking rum and watching the sunset is the perfect way to end a day.

Yum you guys. Yum.

ROTI = AMAZING Bread (thin dough traditionally made in India and known as Roti), potatoes, curry, chicken, and vegetables all wrapped up together to look like a giant burrito. We picked some up at Grill Master but apparently they are very common on the Island. If you are a foodie I encourage you to make…

Figs

Today I chopped down a tree! Well… I attempted to do so. The land beneath the Mains’ home is lush with various fruits and wildlife. Today Asher took me down to a fig tree that was ready to be harvested. I gave a few swings but the thick heavy trunk would not give! After about…

From Milwaukee to Grenada

Today I leave for Grenada and couldn’t be more excited. For the next few months I will be exploring the country, eating chocolate, avoiding bugs, and making art. Follow me here and on Instagram (@amy_on_the_island) to see updates on what I am making and what this amazing country has to offer.
